HOENIX — In a thematically consistent turn of events, music critics have declared 2020’s official song of the summer to be the quiet whirring sound generated by 300 hospital patients on ventilators.
While major artists such as Beyoncé, Harry Styles, Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande have submitted potential songs of the summer, from crooning anthems to club bangers, they have all been eclipsed by a relatively unknown group called The Intubated. Their hit, “We’re All Fucked,” has captured the spirit of 2020’s hottest months by overlaying the sound of mechanically assisted breathing with regular beeping and occasionally more urgent-sounding beeping.
The breakout song’s infectious beat has caused it to go viral on TikTok, where thousands of users have spread videos of themselves performing a dance move it has inspired, “the medically induced coma.”
First released in January, the song has gone through an unusual iterative process. Its original version had just a single ventilator, but The Intubated have re-released multiple versions over the last several months, and they plan to feature a Benny Blanco-produced remix on their upcoming album, The Second Wave.
